Guidance in the form of mentoring is an essential educational tool in redirecting a young adult’s orientation from negative ideas influenced by their peers to one of self-empowerment and possibility. In a school setting, a caring guidance counselor can be seen as a role model and mentor and highly respected by students. With their leadership and wisdom, and a capacity to listen, the impact of proper guidance on the individual can position the young adult on the correct path to best pursue their dreams.
Sadly, school-based programs in inner cities and rural Indigenous lands are often insufficient, or worse, non-existent. Hence, the need for supplemental programs guided by informed, local community professionals to help young adults envision the path of their future through positive learning and activity is gravely needed.
